Genetics determine the color of the eyes, which often darkens in the first few years of life.

As a person ages or the lighting shifts, eye color can change slightly, but some people seek lasting, significant adjustments. If a person wants to change their eye color temporarily, this is most often accomplished with contact lenses. There are many types available that provide different effects. For people hoping to alter their eye color permanently, iris implant surgery is available.

However, due to the severe associated risks, many doctors discourage this option. In this article, we describe how eye color develops and the most common ways to change it, temporarily or permanently.

Because of the many possible combinations, the eye color of a child may not match that of either parent, making it nearly impossible to predict.

The eye color of most babies will darken in the first few years of life. During this time, the body produces a darker pigment, known as melanin. People sometimes notice that their eye color lightens with age.

This is natural and should not be a cause for concern. Visibility lenses are tinted to help people see whether their lenses are in their case. The tinting also helps a person to find them if they are accidentally dropped.

They do not fully alter the color of the eye, but they can intensify it, making it stand out more. On these lenses, the iris is colored in fully, allowing a person to change their eye color completely. As with corrective lenses, decorative lenses have certain risks. I have always incorrectly called this color eye hazel! Hazel eyes mostly consist of shades of brown and green. Individuals whose eyes appear to be one color closest to the pupil, another color a little farther our, and another color around the edge of the iris are likely to have hazel eyes.

Red eyes do exist. Picture white bunnies with pink eyes. Because there is so little melanin in the eyes, there is nothing to conceal the blood vessels hard at work. These red eyes are different from the red eyes you sometimes see in photographs when a flash is used. The pupil is an opening at the center of the iris that appears black, while the white part of your eye is called the sclera.

The color of the iris depends on the presence of a brown pigment called melanin, the same pigment that determines skin color and hair color.

Eyes with a lot of melanin are darker, and eyes with less melanin are blue, green, hazel, amber or gray. Gray eyes are neither recessive nor dominant. A recessive gene only shows up when there are two copies of it present. It was thought that if you inherited one gene for brown eyes and one gene for blue eyes, the gene for brown eyes would dominate and both of your eyes would be brown.

Today scientists know this is not the case and that many genes play a role in how eye color develops. Most of those genes help regulate melanin. Gray eyes can appear in various shades, including dark gray, gray-blue, gray-green or almost hazel.
